EXTRACT FROM THE BOOK
"The best way to judge people is by the measure of their love. An accurate assessment is possible because it is the capacity to love in the individual that distinguishes one person from another. This is supported by the fact that love is a fundamental requirement for real mental growth. And it is necessary for the orderly restoration of our human nature.
The sad fact is few people manage to cross the threshold to a life of intellect and love. It is true that humans experience many kinds of love corresponding to different levels of one’s being. And love can be expressed at the level of sense or reason. Yet it seems that people often find it difficult to love because they are blinded and dehumanized by ignorance. This is hardly surprising since the darkness of ignorance obscures from one’s consciousness the divine beauty of love. It also conceals from the intellect the truth that is its perfection.
Since love enlightens us, it effectively triumphs over ignorance and the darkest elements of human nature. It diminishes our capacity to hate, prevents us from becoming selfish and wicked, and dispels damaging emotions such as pride, jealousy, and envy. It also inspires us to follow common goals, values, and principles that unify humanity.
Another important benefit of love is that it deflects evil from our lives. So it is always possible for people to avoid evil by embracing principles that would steer them in the direction of love. This has to be a desirable option because evil is a negation of the perfection due to every person, and it de facto oppresses humanity. What’s more, evil flourishes only because of our inability to overcome obstacles, such as ignorance, that hinder our freedom to love.
Admittedly, love is the noblest occupation of the human mind. And our highest moral fulfilment consists in our sincere love for others. So although human love may assume various orientations, it should always be genuine. And love is not genuine if the maxim it proposes is in any way connected with one’s likes and dislikes.
The truth is that we are under moral obligation to broaden our capacity to love. And a reliable way to grow in love is to always act within the limits prescribed by reason. To act in accordance with reason in any human relationship is to act correctly in the relationship. Reason helps us to recognize the intrinsic and absolute value of the individual. It reminds us that all human beings have the same nature, dignity, destiny, and needs. Above all, reason enables us to develop our native goodness since it guides us in making morally right choices. And we can gain moral freedom when we become obedient to the law of reason. So we must be guided by reason and love in our quest to attain the perfection of our characters and fulfil ourselves as human beings."
